Can't I do this myself?
When selecting a College Consultant to work with, you should do
a little due diligence. You should first know that there is a distinct
difference between a Scholarship Search “Scam” Company
and an College Consultant.
Scholarship Search “Scam” Companies made the news years ago by targeting panic-stricken high school seniors and their parents with guarantees of scholarships for a fee. Most all were scams that defrauded thousands of families out of millions of dollars.
To combat these scholarship scam companies, the Federal Trade Commission instituted the College Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act of 2000. Since its inception, the Fraud Prevention Act has investigated, fined, and obtained injunctions against most all of the fraudulent Scholarship Search Companies.
College Counseling, Preparation, and Planning Companies, on the other hand, can be an invaluable resource. These are companies that work hand-in-hand with your student and your family throughout the entire process offering career planning, major course of study selection, college selection guidance, admissions assistance, financial aid, and gap funding expertise.
When researching a company, stay away from those that “guarantee” admission and/or funding. Find out how many years they have been in business and how many students they have served.
How do I know this isn't just another scholarship scam?
First, we do not offer scholarships. We do however help you receive the best scholarships of all. The ones that come from the colleges themselves.
While no scholarship or grant opportunities should be
overlooked, college financing does have its share of scammers. According to the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC), you should look for the following signs of
scams in scholarship offers:
- Any suggestion that you must pay in exchange for a scholarship.
- Your scholarship will be held only if you provide credit card or bank account numbers.
- The organization is offering information about funding sources not available anywhere else.
- Any indication that you've been selected as a finalist for a contest you did
not enter.
